On January 5, 2025, the animal rights group Central Pennsylvania Animal Action staged a protest on the sidewalk by the Pennsylvania Farm Show entrance at 2300 North Cameron Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, US.
The group wanted to highlight the “inherent cruelty” of animal agriculture and the events held during the farm show, such as rodeos, pulling contests and celebrity milking competitions. In addition to the protest based on holding signs, the group also did vegan outreach engaging the passing public in conversations relating to veganism and animal exploitation, with the aim of helping them to become vegan.
When announcing the protest, a press statement from the group reads, “The animals are forced to attend the 2025 Pennsylvania Farm Show, many spending their last days of life in unfamiliar surroundings, filled with loud noises and thousands of people. These animals are not seen as individuals, worthy of living their lives on their terms…The inherent cruelty of animal agriculture is not an event worth celebrating in Pennsylvania or anywhere else.”
After the event, the group posted this on Facebook: “Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and traffic to show up for the animals at the Farm Show Protest & Outreach today. Every person who read one of our signs, took a pamphlet or spoke to one of us paused to question their beliefs about animal agriculture.”
The Pennsylvania Farm Show is an annual agricultural exposition celebrating Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry, held every January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is the largest indoor agricultural event in the US, covering 24 acres (97,000 m2) spread throughout eleven halls. This event was first held in 1917 as Pennsylvania’s State Fair.
