From the 31st of January to the 2nd of February 2025, the Vegan Tamale Fair 2025 will be held in the heart of Mexico City’s historic centre, where the traditional tamales consumed on Candlemas Day will be vegan (tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made from nixtamalized corn dough, which is steamed into a corn husk or banana leaves).

The fair will be part of the Vegan and Artisan Bazaar, a space dedicated to promoting respect for animals and healthy living, where attendees will be able to find products compatible with veganism.

As in previous years (this will be the tenth edition), visitors will be able to enjoy delicious tamales made with ingredients entirely free of animal products, such as mushrooms, hoja santa, purslane, chocolate, mole, beans and squash flower, among many other options. In addition, there will be hot drinks to accompany the tamales, such as the classic champurrado (a hot and thick drink made of chocolate and flour), perfect to complement this Mexican dish in a cosy and festive atmosphere.

This event is an opportunity to support producers and entrepreneurs who promote veganism, as well as support shelters and organisations that work for animal welfare and the environment.

Candlemas Day is known in the Catholic Church as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ. It commemorates the day when the Virgin Mary first took him to the Temple in Jerusalem. It is celebrated on the 2nd of February in several Catholic countries, 40 days after Christmas. In Mexico, it is one of the most important religious celebrations, celebrated with a traditional dish.
