Vegan kettlebell competitor Nicholas Thick has surpassed his own expectations with a performance that is being ratified as a world record. The British 52-year-old has competed in ultramarathons, endurance cycling, and kettlebell.
Kettlebell is a traditional strength sport that has surged in popularity recently, in which lifters repeat a movement within a time limit for maximum reps. The most popular competition is over ten minutes, although kettlebell ‘marathons’ last for an hour. Nicholas has just taken on a Super Marathon lasting two hours.
“I was hoping to hit 1,200 reps. That’s what I trained to do,” he told Great Vegan Athletes, “I totally smashed what I set out to do.”
Lifting a 20kg bell for 2 hours non-stop, Nick scored a rep count of 1,404 which is well over the target of ten reps per minute.
Nick went vegan eight and a half years ago. Nick shows with his successes that you can thrive on a vegan diet as an athlete. “You can get everything you need from a plant based diet,” he says. On his choice, he said “As I delved deeper into my training. I transitioned to being vegan, finding more energy and better recovery on a plant based diet. Eating animals just never sat right for me. There are no gains from the digestion of animals and products produced from animals and their suffering.”
